Want to learn more? Explore our commonly asked questions about our topical flea and tick treatment for dogs.

What's in it?

Wags Advance® kills and repels fleas, ticks, and lice on dogs. This topical treatment is vet-formulated, safe, and effective at eliminating all stages of the flea life cycle.

Wags Advance® topical flea treatment for dogs is produced in the USA and contains the same active ingredients found in Bayer’s K9 Advantix® II for Dogs:

Wags Advance® for Dogs is EPA-approved safe and effective. The primary active ingredient is featured in other big-name dog flea med brands, and PetFriendly products are customized and conveniently delivered straight to your door at an affordable price.

What does it do?

Wags Advance® for Dogs topical flea treatment:

  • Rapidly and critically kills and prevents ticks mosquitoes, lice, and all three life stages of biting fleas (eggs, larvae, and adult fleas).

  • Is effective at killing fleas within 12 hours and continues to prevent reinfestations for up to a month. This includes all types of fleas like cat fleas and dog fleas.

  • Will kill ticks at all life stages that may transmit Lyme disease. Wags Advance® covers the American dog tick, Black-legged deer tick, Brown dog tick, and Lone Star tick. Helps prevent dangerous diseases from flea and tick bites such as Lyme disease.

  • May reduce the incidence of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), a hypersensitivity skin disorder induced by the feeding activity of fleas.

  • While it does kill and prevent mosquitoes, it does not prevent heartworm. Your dog will need heartworm prevention for complete coverage.

How do I apply?

Applying Wags Advance® topical flea treatment for dogs is simple:

  • Find your dog and make sure the star of the box matches your pet.

  • Prepare the applicator by holding it upright and cutting the tip with scissors.

  • Part your dog’s fur and hold the applicator tip to your dog’s skin starting at the base of the neck.

  • Gently squeeze the applicator to empty the contents equally in 3-4 spots from their neck to the base of their tail.

  • Discard the applicator in the trash and resume snuggling once the solution is dry.*

*Wait at least 24-48 hours before bathing or submerging in water. If you have any additional questions read our full instructions.

How long does it last?

A single dose of Wags Advance® for Dogs is effective for 30 days. For best protection, we recommend treating the moment your box arrives. We deliver your pet's topical flea treatment every month on application day.

Does it cause any side effects?

While typically very rare, flea treatments (topicals, chewable, prescription oral flea/tick treatment, wearable treatments like flea collars) can cause mild side effects.

The most common health-related symptoms include:

If these symptoms do not go away, contact your vet right away. You can also reach our emergency medical line at (888) 738-3911 — they are available 24/7.

How is it dosed?

One dose of Wags Advance® flea meds for dogs is EPA-approved safe and effective for dogs weighing at least 4 pounds. Each topical flea treatment is dosed according to your pet's current weight:

  • Wags Advance® for Small Dogs: 4 to 10 pounds

  • Wags Advance® for Medium Dogs: 11 to 20 pounds

  • Wags Advance® for Large Dogs: 21 to 55 pounds

  • Wags Advance® for Extra Large Dogs: 56 pounds or more

All of our products are formulated by vets and dosed to your pet's unique weight and health needs.

Does it require a prescription?

Nope! Wags Advance® for Dogs is delivered straight to your door without a prescription, vet visit, or trip to the store. Some flea and tick prevention is given orally and includes ingredients like:

  • Organic hemp seed powder

  • Organic ginger root

  • Natural bacon flavoring

  • Natural turkey flavoring

In any case, we recommend checking with your vet if you are switching from another over-the-counter flea and tick prevention for the health of your pet.

How old does my pup need to be?

Your puppy should be at least 7 weeks old and at least 4 pounds before using Wags Advance® flea treatments. We recommend checking with your veterinarian before starting treatment for puppies and dogs. Learn more about when to start flea and tick treatment on puppies.

Is it waterproof? Can I bathe my dog?

Wags Advance® for Dogs is waterproof but requires the natural oils in your dog's skin and fur to properly distribute the active ingredients, such as imidacloprid, effectively.

Avoid bathing your dog or allowing them to go swimming for at least 48 hours before and after applying topical treatments. If you bathe your dog often or want to kill adult fleas and remove flea dirt we recommend using mild pet shampoo.

Can I use this product on my pregnant, nursing, or breeding dog?

Our Wags Advance® for Dogs topical flea & tick protection has not been tested on breeding, nursing, or pregnant dogs. We always recommend you discuss applying any product to your dog in these conditions with your veterinarian. Feel free to contact our veterinarian team at help@petfriendlybox.com before you reach out to your vet.

Is it safe for cats?

No! Wags Advance® for Dogs can be fatal for cats. Keep your cats away from treated dogs for at least 24 hours after treatment. Multi-pet owners — Paws Plus® for Cats flea, tick, and lice protection is for you.

Does it work against ear mites?

This product does not work against heartworms, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. You will need a heartworm preventative in addition to this product. But, this product prevents and kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and chewing lice.

Can I use other flea and tick treatments in combination with others?

We recommend you pick one flea medicine brand and stick to that treatment exclusively. Follow these guidelines if you are using another type of flea and tick med for dogs:

  • If you are using another topical brand (flea drops for dogs like Frontline®), we recommend bathing your pet in degreasing dish soap and applying our topical flea and tick prevention 24-48 hours after.

  • If you are using a flea collar or tick collar, we recommend bathing your pet in Dawn dish soap and applying our topical medication 24-48 hours after.

  • If you are treating with oral medications (flea pills for dogs like Bravecto®), we recommend waiting 30 days after treating your dog before applying our topical solution.

  • If you use or have already used shampoo, but want to switch to Wags Advance® for Dogs, contact our veterinarian team at help@petfriendlybox.com.

Flea and tick meds are not created equally. Chat with your vet about the dog flea meds for your pup. Make sure to treat your home with a home spray like Natural Care Flea and Tick Spray or PetFriendly Household Spray.

I still see flea and ticks, what gives?

Gaining control of an infestation can take anywhere from 30 days to several months. Parasites can wreak havoc on your pets and in your home.

  • For your pets: The best way to control parasites is through consistent protection. This will help you prevent and kill pests and prevent diseases and re-infestations. Be sure to follow the instructions provided.

  • For your home: Treat your home with a household spray that has IGRs. Best-in-class sprays cover a combination of fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests. We have one available to add to your box that will take care of the insects and parasites in your home.
